The Balcony

She saw the rain pour right in front of her face, but she was completely dry. She reached her hand out to feel the soothing rain on her hands. She looked down and saw the ground forty feet away. The old wooden rail separating her from the rain swayed slightly with the wind. Back and forth it went, creaking each time it came back towards her. The creaking sound never seemed to leave her head, even when she couldn't hear it. She was drawn to the familiarity of it.

A chill rushed down her spine as she saw lightning in the distance and she shivered. She wanted so badly to be uncovered, to experience the pouring rain in a new way. For more than her hands to feel the rain. She slowly leaned forward over the railing to that she could feel the rain in her hair. Suddenly, the creaking sound turned into a crack.

Harrison Bergeron

"Harrison Bergeron" is a dystopian short story based in the year 2081, where all people are made to be equal. The people who are better than the others are given handicaps to keep them the same as the lowest people. Good looking people would wear masks to look the same as the ugly people, and people who were good at something, would hear an awful noise in their ear every few minutes to remind them to be average. This story brought up many questions because it was very different and sort of confusing. I had questions like, Who has Harrison, and why was he taken away?, Why did George always hear sounds in his ear? By the end of the story, these questions were answered in the text, so they are labeled as level one questions. The story answered that Harrison Bergeron was Hazel and George's son, and that he was taken away because he was attractive, seven feet tall, intelligent, and dangerous to the society.  George heard a sound in his ear every few minutes to remind him to be average. There were also some questions that weren't answered by the end of the text like, Why was Hazel crying?, Why did Harrison and the ballerina kiss on the ceiling?, If only the good looking people wrote masks, wouldn't that contrast the people even more? These questions made me really think about the passage to try and find answers.

This story made me realize how different and awful our society would be if we were all the same. I didn't totally understand the moral of this story, I also feel like there might be more than one moral to this story. This story comes from so many different places, which makes it hard to focus on one point of the story. I was confused, and my mind was troubled by this story because of all the questions I had, and still have about it. Overall, I enjoyed this story, because it was different than things that i usually read.

Personal Narrative Experience

I am really enjoying writing a personal narrative for this class. I enjoy being assigned to write about an event that is really meaningful to me, because I have lots of detail to put in the story. I chose to write about when my little brother was born, because it was a very meaningful experience to me. I remember it vividly, even though it was five years ago. I liked getting feedback from my reading groups on how to edit my paper, it makes it easier to figure out what to edit in order to get a good grade.

Dear 9 year old

You should really try not to get caught up in everything that happens at this age. As bad as you think it is now, middle and high school will only get worse. If there is drama, stay out of it, it's most likely about things that won't matter in the long run, or even the next day. Don't avoid hanging out with people who aren't necessarily your "best friends" because you never know how your friend groups will change. You might need someone there for you in the future if your friends find other people to hang out with. Don't get in stupid fights with people who aren't worth it, because it won't do you any good. At this age you're probably excited, and nervous about middle school approaching, but just enjoy lower school while you can, it doesn't last forever.

Sep 4-Sept 11 reading update

I am currently reading "The Heir" by Kiera Cass. I started this book on Monday. So far, the author is explaining what has happened in this fictional world over the fast few decades, since there was a large time gap from where the last book in the series left off, and this one started. The main character, Eadlyn, doesn't expect her selection experience to be anything like her parents experience. There is tons of violence going on it the world since the abolishing of the caste system. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this book because it seems interesting, and I loved the other books in the series.

9/11 Article

I read an article on the tragedy referred to as "9/11", when two planes were crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City on September, 11, 2001. This article went into depth about the situation, including things like what happened on the planes before they crashed, and the building stories that were crashed right into. I also enjoyed this article because it explained what happened to the other two planes that were crashed in the tragedy. I thought that was interesting because not many people talk about them. I really enjoyed this article.

Doc, Did I Wake You Up?

This book didn't really have much of a plot. This book told a different story with every chapter. Each chapter told a different experience that the author, Dr, William H Green, DVM, had while working with veterinary medicine. This book is absolutely not appealing to everyone, this book mainly appealed to me because of my career goals for the future, working in veterinary medicine. Doctor Green handled mainly large animals such as cows and horses, and he was always called in the middle of the night to go service people with sick animals. This common late night call led to the title, because "Doc, did I wake you up?" was commonly said to him on the phone. I really enjoyed this book.

St. John

Over the summer, I went to St. John, VI with my sister, my grandmother, my aunt and my little cousin. While we were there we did fun things like renting an orange jeep, exploring the land, watching the iguanas, and went to the beach and pool. We saw some really cool things that you could never see here. The plants and palm trees were beautiful and the weather was perfect. We went to some amazing restaurants and some cool stores. It was fun to watch my grandmother and aunt drive around because they could never remember to stay on the left side of the road. This trip was a lot of fun and I would love to go back.
