Anticipation our next book

I agree that ambition is a positive and desirable trait in a person. When people have ambition, it helps them get things done the way they want it. Ambitious people are inspired by the outcomes of the things that they want, and they strive to achieve it. People with great ambition work hard and don't expect anyone to do the work for them. I admire their independence and work ethic and believe that it is a great trait for someone to have.

I neither agree or disagree that people that are in a position of power are happy. This statement depends on who you're talking about. Some people strive and live off of power. People who are power hungry like this are most likely happy in a position of power and are happy to be in charge. Other people who are in power desire to live a normal life and not making decisions all the time. They have to strong urge to be the boss and would rather someone else do it.

Hits and misses

Over this year, I have tried my hardest to turn in my best work all the time in English. I believe that I has many high points when it comes to my grades in this class. One of the best pieces of writings I turned in this year was my personal narrative that I wrote in the first quarter. I felt confident writing it because I knew that everything I was writing was valid information and I didn't have to worry about accidental plagarism and citations. I also felt that my literary analysis was a strong piece of writing that I turned in this year. I think this is because I had a strong argument that was easy to defend. These were two of my strongest pieces of writings this year.

There were some things that I didn't do so great on this year. One of them was my annotated bibliography. Looking back, I don't think that I included enough information in this writing. It also might not have been long enough. I also had trouble remembering to submit my reading for each week in the first semester which resulted in my grade lowering. I need to make sure I do better on assignments like these in the future.

What were your favorite characters childhood shows and characters?

When I was little, my altime favorite show was Hannah Montana (and still is today). I can't be completely sure why I loved this show, but I guess there was something about secret pop stars that caught my 6 year old interest. I loved this show because Miley, aka Hannah, was only 13 when she began recording songs, seeking albums, and going on tour. She become famous around the world in only eighth grade. I thought this was pretty unbelievable and incredibly cool that the pulled it off. I also loved looking at all the costumes and watching her perform on the show. I loved this show so much, that being front row at her concert when I was 8, is still counted as one of the best days of my life.

When I was obsessed with this show, my favorite character was Miley/Hannah. She was funny, a good friend, respectful. and nice. She seemed to have a plan for everything, but as I got older I started to realize not all of these plans worked out. By noticing the plans that didn't work out as I rewatched the show a couple years ago, I realized that her father tells her not to do the things that don't work out.  However, Miley does anything she wants  and rarely listens to her father. At the end of the episode, she will always get caught and say to her dad, "I'm sorry, I won't disobey you again". She does it again. So It's safe to say that my views on Miley changed significantly over time.

Purple Hibiscus reading

Throughout reading the novel Purple Hibiscus, I have realized that it is a difficult read, but it's not hard to understand and comprehend. Though Purple Hibiscus is more challenging than ATDPTI, it is no more challenging than Lord of the Flies. I have found that annotating helps me greatly when it comes to comprehending this novel. Marking the important things that happen in the book makes it easier for me to go back later and talk about it. Annotating has not been hard to keep up with, and I find at least a few things on each page that I feel I should mark.

Something that I find challenging is comprehending the situation in the novel when it comes to unfamiliar African words or rituals. Some of the prayers that the characters say makes me wonder what type of prayer they contain. Papa makes sure that his kids say some of these prayers everyday, so that makes me wonder what he's drawn  to in the prayer. I also find some of the African phrases that aren't translated in the book. To solve this problem, I often google the terms, or read further in the book, in which some phrases might be explained later. I am enjoying this novel very much and am excited to see how it ends.

Political Post

The contributing authors to this Washington Post article explain how a successful business deal "closer" in America, President Donald Trump, faced a hard failure with the health care bill last week. I read that while many politicians in Washington, D.C. find the president charming and while some may enjoy perks like visiting the Oval Office, bowling in the White House, taking rides on Air Force one, and making visits to the president's Florida estate; they will give a yes vote if the policy they are looking for is not there, regardless of party lines. This article also gives thought to the question of whether or not President Trump was 100 percent confident in this bill himself. In the article, the bill reportedly would increase premium costs for millions and remove many working class citizens from their existing coverage, hurting the people who voted for Donald Trump, leaving us to believe that he wasn't totally supportive of the bill.

I agree with the authors in that closing a deal in private business is different in the Capitol of the United States. It's no secret that President Trump expects to come out on top in negotiations. This epic failure might be the one to prove that the substance has to be there to get "yes" votes, regardless of political parties. Too many republicans could not support the bill for their own reasons including lawmakers from North Carolina , New Jersey , and Florida. I chose this article because one of the most important issues in America today is affordable health care coverage. The president can't move on to other important issues until he can until he can strike a deal on healthcare in the capital.

Houston

Over the long weekend, I went to Houston, Texas with my sister and my friend. We left Baton Rouge early Friday morning so we could have a full day in Houston. On the way, we stopped in Lake Charles to get Yogurt Mountain because it had been a while since we've had it. When we got to Houston we went to eat lunch. The restaurant was decorated for St. Patricks Day and there was live music and great food. Everyone came by our table to pass out beads and other festive things.

After lunch we headed to the NRG stadium for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. There was a huge piece of land with crazy rides and tons of carnival food. We bought tickets and fast passes so we never had to wait in line. There were insane rides like Zero Gravity, Insanity, and G- Force. Most of the rides went crazy fast and upside down, and left you dizzy. After riding tons of rides, we went inside the stadium and got some food and sat down to watch the last few minutes of the rodeo. After the rodeo was over, one of my favorite bands, Fifth Harmony, went on stage to perform. We sang and danced, and after the concert, we went outside and did more rides until they closed at midnight. Early Saturday morning, we drove home. I had so much fun in Houston and I hope that I can go back next year.

Learning Reflection

I had trouble getting used to the ways of high school in the beginning of this school year. It took me and good while through the second quarter to get the hang of it. I tried my hardest, but in some classes, I just couldn't make an A. I had trouble adjusting to the work load and the hard assessments. Though the first semester was troubling for me, towards the end, I started stepping up my game. I noticed that taking notes on everything and studying far in advance for quizzes and tests would improve my grades in all classes.

Once I returned from Christmas Break, I knew that I was ready to push through with my best efforts until the end of the school year. I started using the note taking and not cramming methods religiously, for every class and every test. This improved my grade average in all classes. I went from only making all B's and two A's in the first semester, to making all A's and one B in the third quarter. I am so glad that I found ways to improve my grade point average. I plan to continue working like this for the remainder of the school year, and the years to come.

New Orleans

The first weekend of Mardi Gras, I went to New Orleans with my friends and family. On Saturday, we all went to lunch in a hotel restaurant. My sister, Juliana, and her friend Eugenie went to the bathroom during lunch. While in the bathroom, the girls see a homeless lady bathing in the bathroom sink, and talking to herself. After they used the restroom, the girls quickly ran out of the bathroom because they were freaked out by the lady. As Juliana sat down at the table she realized she had left her phone in the bathroom. She went to retrieve it, but she could not find it. The guard tells my sister that he had asked the homeless lady if the phone was hers and the homeless lady took it and ran. The homeless lady turned the phone off so we couldn't track it, so we turned it on "lost mode" on an app. We all knew that we would never see that phone again, because the lady could be anywhere.

As we were walking around New Orleans later that day, we saw a homeless lady standing by a fence. My moms friend whispered jokingly "Hah I bet she had Ju's phone." Juliana looks and says "That's her." My mom approaches her and asks if she has the phone, the lady pulled it out of her pocket and hands it to my mom with no hesitation. My friends and I thought it was so cool that we actually found the lady and got Juliana's phone back.

Song analysis

I decided to do an analysis on the song Umbrella by Rihanna. Like most songs, Umbrella included rhymes as a poetic device, there are many rhymes throughout the song. There is a rhyme in every stanza. There is not a lot of internal rhyme throughout the song, most of the rhyme are end rhymes. End rhymes are where the words at the end of the line rhymes.

Another poetic device that Rihanna uses in Umbrella is repetition. In the chorus, Rihanna repeats the second syllable in "umbrella" multiple times. Singing, "under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh", she creates repetition. She also shows repetition towards the end of the song. She repeats every line twice, "It's pouring rain
It's pouring rain
Come into me
Come into me
It's pouring rain
It's pouring rain"
I feel that these two poetic devices are the most prominent in this song.

Destin

Whenever my family and I visit our condo in Destin, Florida, there is so many things that we enjoy doing. When we are at the beach we love to go to bed late and sleep late. When we wake up we usually eat pancakes or cereal. Sometimes we go to the Candy Maker store that is in walking distance from the condo because they serve good breakfast. It's always fun to eat breakfast there because we bring our dogs and sit outside. After breakfast we get dressed and go to the beach and pool all day. Getting to lay on the beach all day feels like a luxery. When the waves are big, sometimes my sister and I stay in the ocean for hours jumping the waves which are worth lauding.

We love to stay on the beach to watch the sunset because it is always pretty over the ocean. After watching the sunset we go to the pool to rinse all of our beach chairs off and to sit in the hot tub and swim before we go upstairs. We then go upstairs and shower and get dressed for dinner if we plan to eat out. We love to walk on the beach to a restaurant called The Backporch. My sister and I always order the crab legs. When we get back to the condo, we all lay on the couch and watch some of our favorite shows, which are mostly sitcoms. Going to the beach is when my family happy.

Poem

The sun was shining down on her through the field of flowers. The cool breeze flew through her hair and brought the scent of the flowers right to her nose. The bright sun made her blue eyes glimmer like the ocean. She heard a small whimper behind a large willow tree in the middle of the field.
She walked quietly to the large tree and peeked around the trunk.
It was a tiny spaniel puppy rolling around in the green grass.
She sat down in the cool grass and softly spoke to the puppy, "Come here dog." The puppy's tail began to wag as his little legs carried him all the way to the girl. As the puppy approached the girl, the tiny dog said is a soft, high voice, "Hello, it's nice to see someone in this field after all this time." The dog seemed to be young, and the girl wondered where he came from, and how old he was. The girl asked him another question, but she couldn't hear what she was saying. She began to panic, and the small dog softly barked and climbed into her lap and began to sleep.

research process, ups and downs

Over the course of writing this research paper, I've realized how important it is to have a very detailed outline. Though writing the outline was hard work, once I started writing my draft, I could see how much it was paying off. Writing your outline with a lot of detail makes the draft so much easier to write. If you have already written most the information you need in your paper, there isn't much that you need to add. I have also learned a lot more about MLA formatting and citations for a paper. Once I got used to it, I realized it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

One thing that I had trouble on while researching was making my notecards. I felt like I was doing them wrong. The example assignment online didn't help me see what I was missing. I was confused about the titles of the notecards, and how they would answer the research question. It turns out that I had misunderstood, and I realized the the pile titles were supposed to answer the research question. I'm glad I figured out my notecard problem before turning them in.

reading response for ATDPTI

In the chapters of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian that I read this week, the plot took an unexpected turn. Junior went from being the Indian dork at school, to be being one of the most popular guys at his school. Almost all of the students at Reardan began to respect him, even the kid he punched in the face. He is said the be "semi dating" the schools popular girl. She is with him so she doesn't have too many standards to live up to. She is tired of being the popular girl that everyone looks up to.

I think another interesting event that I read this week was that Juniors sister ran away and got married. She got married to a guy that she met in a casino, and married him shorty after. This was interesting to me because she had been living in her parents basement for a while, excluding herself from many things. Junior mentioned that she might have ran off to get married because she was trying to live a romance novel instead of writing one. I am still interested to see what happens with her dream to write romance novels. This book has been pretty eventful so far.

My obsession with yogurt mountain

Destin, Florida: A beautiful city with beaches, palm trees, an ocean breeze, and Yogurt Mountain. Yogurt Mountain is a frozen yogurt shop located at 985 US-98, Destin, FL 32541. Yogurt Mountain, often abbreviated at "YOMO", is always my families first stop when driving into Destin. In fact, driving up to yogurt mountain at 11:02, and realizing that if we would've left our house just 3 minutes earlier, we would be eating YOMO, is a nearly heartbreaking experience for my family and I. All Destin trips involve at least three trips to YOMO, so if you think about it, my family has given way too much money to this one shop over the years. Sometimes, my sister and I know more about the store than the employees.

Yogurt Mountain has over 20 flavors to choose from, along with bowl dividers for indecisive people like myself. Some of my favorites are birthday cake, cookies and cream, tart, triple chocolate, and my all time favorite, pomegranate energy tart. Unfortunately, pomegranate energy tart switches out with blueberry tart every two weeks, so when you go can affect the whole experience. Their are more than 60 toppings on the YOMO topping bar. The toppings include candy, fruit, nuts, and sauces like chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel. Yogurt mountain is better than any yogurt place that I've ever been to, and I recommend going if you ever see one.

reading response

When I first started reading "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, I was not expecting to enjoy it. After reading the first 20 pages, I realized that it wasn't a bad book and I figured I would grow to like it. So far, this book has been funny, and also relatable from a teens standpoint. I can already tell that Junior is courageous because of his decision to move to a new school for better education, though he realized he would get made fun of. I can tell that he really wants to fit in.

I am looking forward to meeting Juniors sister. She has been spoken of by quite a few characters in the book so far, but we have yet to be introduced to her. I feel as if we haven't encountered her yet because she stays in the basement for most of the time. I am eager to find out why she gave up her dreams, why she is hiding out in the basement, and what she has planned for life. I think she will be an interesting character that will add emphasis to the story.

my research paper topic

My research topic is how magic related to religion in the early modern world. Magic became popular around the 15th century. I think that it is interesting how different kinds of magic related to religions. Magic relates to religion within the beliefs of spirits, devils, and angels. Christians believed that spirits lurked in ordinary objects.

Magic related to religion because of how the church was related to the witch trials. The hunting of women that were accused of witchcraft were organized by the church. The church also organized the punishments of witches, which in some cases included death. Eventually the church realized that many innocent people were being killed for witchcraft, and that that the witch hunts were uncalled for. This topic is really interesting and it has been interesting to learn about.

Last semester

Last semester, I learned that taking notes on everything will improve your grades by far. Even if you don't think that it matters, or you think that you will never see it on a test, it helps to write it down. Sometimes the information you don't think will matter, ends up being on a test, or relates to another topic that you learn. Writing notes with different colors and highlighters helps me to study the notes, puts the information into categories, and makes note taking a little bit less boring. Taking lots of notes improved all of my grades in the 2nd quarter.

Once I realized how much difference taking notes made, I started doing it all the time. This semester, I hope to make even better grades than last semester, since I started taking lots of notes early on. I can already see improvements in my grades from the beginning of the last quarters, and the beginning of this one. I've made A's on all of my tests and quizzes so far this semester. I hope that taking notes will continue to help me throughout high school.

Christmas Break

After Christmas, my sister and I went to spend New Years with our grandfather in Bossier City. The day that we got to Bossier, we met up with our friend who lives in Bossier for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. After dinner we all went to see a movie together. The next day, it was raining, so our grandfather suggested that we got to Painting with a Twist. After painting we went to the Boardwalk and we saw a movie and shopped.

On New Years Eve, we all stayed up late together playing boardgames and watching New Years Rockin Eve. My sister and I played music and ate food. On New Years Day, we ate breakfast at Ihop. After breakfast, we got in the car to hear home. We all had very much fun in Shreveport, and I'm excited to go back.

Quarter 3 week 1. Research

Finding sources for my research paper topic was difficult. I had to search for a while before I found any primary sources. I think that I have multiple credible sources that will help me answer my research question. Though it was time consuming, the annotative bibliography helped me understand what my sources were about, and helped me come to a conclusion about how they would strengthen my research paper. My primary sources were difficult to read because they were written so long ago.

I had trouble finding out why sources were credible, especially when the author was not named. However, creating the summary of the sources was easy. Dr Kuhn helped me understand how to make my evaluations have more depth. After she helped me, I was able to improve my annotative bibliography. Making my notecards have been easy so far. I need to work on making sure my notecard titles answer my research question.
